
Two Essex songwriters have completed a journey started two decades ago and published a song they wrote about a Princess and her tragic life.
Diana, an Ordinary Girl got its first outing on You-Tube the last week of May, the 20th anniversary of Diana, Princess of Wales’ death.
Written by the Hornchurch team of Dave Ross and Nick Dawson and fulfilling a personal promise they made to the memory of the People’s Princess.
Diana made a remarkable impact on everyone during her short life, moving the two songwriters to create their own special tribute to her.
The song was outside Dave and Nick’s usual remit, writing instead a decade of memorable and outstanding shows for the Queens Theatre, Hornchurch Community Musicals; creating a legend in their own right by adding a remarkable new leaf to the professional theatre in Billet Lane.
As with the People’s Princess, they added the People’s Community Theatre and brought a glittering period of entertainment that slotted in perfectly alongside the parameters of professional theatre. The result was outstanding in the excellence and pure enthusiasm of more than 70 local people of all ages who were given the treasured gift of performing on stage, something they all took with both hands and feet.

This song for Diana is the latest of Dave and Nick’s remarkable additions to the exciting ambience that became Hornchurch and the Community Company. It reflects and emphasises the spirit that existed a decade ago when Queens Theatre became a venue for the fulfilment of the hopes and aspirations of appearing on stage that spilled over with fun and laughter.
Though Dave is now retired, Nick is extending his musical career and now a prestigious conductor of the west end smash, Mamma Mia, they are still both active in the community as shown by their latest work.
Looking back at those times is a journey of happy memories and remarkable bonding of such a diverse group. In the time they were all together, there was nothing they could not do or achieve, and a look at the shows, Bubbles in the Air, Up the River Down the Road and the Good Intent to name but three of the many, revealed the pure quality achieved and the pride cemented in each individual.http://Diana an ordinary girl
The shows filled the stage with amateur actors and the auditoriums with patrons who created an atmosphere not seen before or performed with such excellence and imagination since.
There were many young people who developed into excellent actors, one such who went onto to a west end career on stage is Gemma Salter.

Bubbles in the Air launched her professional career and she later took the west end theatrical world by storm in Made In Dagenham, playing alongside and standing in for Bond Girl, Gemma Arterton in the Ford inspired musical. It achieved its West End and world premiere at the Adelphi Theatre in 2014.
Gemma is now much in theatrical demand and playing theatres across the UK.
The story of the Queens Theatre and the Community Company is one to enjoy. It brought magic to the theatre in Billet Lane, Hornchurch and the memories not only linger on, but remain as a constant reminder what enthusiasm, talent and unbridled joy can bring.
Our good deed for the day is to support a Bell Tower.
Now there is something to mull over the cornflakes.
If you can imagine historical buildings clutching their bell towers in agony after a dose of shingles, then you would not be far off the facts.
It is a mystery of our language that one title can take many forms, and by way of explanation, a Church in Kelvedon Hatch, Essex, has a very bad attack and is appealing for help.
The shingles in question act as cladding and surround the bell tower of St Nicholas’ Church and are in great need of being replaced before the rot sets in and the bell loses its ‘ding and dong’.
Unthinkable for church first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 with connections to the Wright Brothers and their leap of faith into the air some eight centuries later.
But first the problem: Shingles are small blocks of wood that surround the spire offering protection and support against the elements. A recent survey by a man who is paid to know about these things has come up with a warning that the present cedar shingles have had their day and need replacing with the strength of good old English Oak.
That is going to cost £40,000.
A massive amount for the coffers to match, so an appeal has gone out from the Rev Mark James and Churchwarden, Christopher Jardine for donations literally, to keep the bells ringing.
Since the bad news survey, the parishioners have managed to raise half that amount but are still short of the final figure.
It is easy to think of this as just another appeal, which of course it is but if left, this could be the last peal.
The financial climate at the moment has left the collecting tins empty, and time is running out. So the church is asking for help from those heritage minded people who really appreciate the beauty of our countryside and prepared to be generous.
For those familiar with the A128 and travel from Brentwood to Ongar, the Church sits on the corner of the beautiful village of Kelvedon Hatch.
History reveals that there has been a community in the area prior to the Domesday Book, which recorded three manors, one being Kelvedon Hall with a church in various forms in the grounds.
The Hall is still proudly standing and is the home of the present incumbent of an ancient right called the Advowson. A gift presenting the next incumbent the right to reside in the Hall. Quite a major hand me down pressy by any standard.
The historical connections of the small settlement mentioned in 1086 record a noble called Alric of Kelvedon Manor, who joined the English fleet in an attempt to see off William and his conquering army. Well that did not work but from this gesture, the church is named after the patron saint of sailors.
As mentioned, another connection is with the family of two brothers credited with the first powered flight, Wilbur and Orville Wright, being the descendants of a previous owner of the Hall, John Wright who bought the manor in 1583.
There is also connection with the Luther Family of Essex with Jane Luther, the wife of Anthonie, buried in the church yard.
The neighbours also get in on the act as the land on which the present church is built, was gifted by George, the eighth Lord Rodney, one of the great naval heroes of Britain whose family lived in the neighbouring manor at Brizes.
The present church rose from the ashes of a few other buildings that over the centuries suffered from neglect and the weather; it was after a monumental fund raising campaign in 1893 when the humble penny from rustic pockets and cracked kitchen glass jars made short work of the £2,000 re-build target. A small amount by today’s standards, but a mountain for a poor agricultural community that realised the consecration of the new St Nicholas’ Church in 1895.
So much history to be explored and going back over a millennium, worth preserving and visiting with artefacts and plaques from the previous buildings on display.
The font dates back from the 14th century and was in the medieval church and now place by the front door.
A remarkable piece of Essex history and one deserves a wander through and perhaps a few more pennies.

It started as a nice quiet week, no rash moments, all events planned out – even down to the good idea to get into training for the annual Leukaemia Research Bike-a-thon through west London.
Now called Bloodwise, the name is not really that relevant compared to the sheer imagined terror of thousands of bright red clad tee shirted riders turning the pleasant quiet roads of Richmond into an artery by a different name.
The similarity to a maelstrom of gushing red wheeled simulated blood corpuscles haemorrhaging from the venal supply routes that descend on the Royal Park is one not to confused with a grazed knee. It is more exciting than that, something akin to the finish line charge of the Tour de France.
Training for a 60 mile run usually entails regular trips out in my part of north Essex where the hills do a fair impression of the Lumps of Rome, but steeper.

The spectacle was sufficient to stop two motorists who witnessed the aerial ballet to see if they could claim salvage, No, I was grateful for their concern but the dent in my pride resembles the non geometric shape of the rear mudguard or the multi-coloured bruising on sternum, thigh, arm and chip out of the right shin. Thank goodness my machine is a Claude Butler Roadster and obviously built for wear and tear.
Movement is confined for a while and accompanied by pitiful sympathy searching groans, but no direct response yet.

The fact that Boris Johnson has just admitted he wrote an anti Brexit article months ago could be treated along side a belief in Faries at the bottom of the garden.
It would appear to be typical of the double standards in the tawdry politics we are now being fed.
The only good thing is that it has the transparency of water and should fool no one.
It shows also that the going is getting tough for the enigma of Westminster and he is trying to extricate himself from the very deep hole he created, and I suspect, this prime example of ‘do it yourself’ is the real reason behind his startling elevation to his present Cabinet position.
Within the parameters of ‘get out of that’, is this the beginnings of Boris revelations to come that it was all a big mistake and he did not really mean it?
Unfortunately for him, he carries far too much luggage enhanced in his ‘Leave’ campaigning to be believed.
I feel it is sad that such tactics should be used on an intelligent electorate, and can only hope that the unwritten warning on the Boris box should be reflected in a result when he stands for re-election.
I think the Lord Protector of England, Oliver Cromwell had a saying that fits; something on the lines of ‘sit here any longer’.

A MAN WHO PHOTOGRAPHED LIVERPOOL’S FINEST 1960s TALENT
For those who can claim an overload in influential people in their life, this blog is for you.
I count myself most fortunate and have lost count of the amazing people who have guided my every step to my present number of summers.
I could fill a phone book with these bright stars beginning with my mum and dad; each contributing an episode to be treasured.
Sadly lights do dim and go out leaving a great void of emotions, something we all experience and survive with cherished memories.
Well, that’s the sad bit over, now for the good part.
One of my most significant mentors was a distant cousin, linked by a matrix of connections through marriage, but one I moved to Liverpool at the tender age of 17 to work for.
Harry Watmough, (pictured above) brother to my fathers sister’s husband Sam, trombonist in the great Joe Loss Band, with a well respected name in the City.
Liverpudlians to the core, and hailing from the proximity of official Scouse land, the famed! Scotland Road, Harry and Sam (pictured left) were iconic examples of their father, Wally, who, like my own Liverpool grandfather, was the centre of the universe.
Harry was a photographer with a studio in Moorfields in Liverpool, in the same building as Brian Epstein’s Nems Enterprises. The cover photograph above is one he took before Pete Best was replaced by Ringo Star on the drums. The literal home of the Beatles and many others but in 1963/4, still sizzling with great potential and before the full Mersey Beat burst on the scene.
The distance from Essex to God’s City was made after emerging from a west end photographic apprenticeship and looking for an exciting job.
Family gossip linked the two needs and resulted in being invited to fill the post of ‘assistant’ to Harry and the unbelievable wrench from home.
Looking at it from Harry’s side, he had a 17 year-old lad, filled with the nuts and bolt knowledge of the mechanics of photography, but very short on the life experiences.
I can now look back and see just what my good friend did for me. He gave me that missing knowledge in the only way he knew, through the magical world of taking pictures.
From the very start, our relationship was warm and not boss/employee. He was in fact a surrogate big brother but with the same inherited sense of humour and fun that I had shared with my Liverpool relations.
Working at times seven day a week, it never seemed like work, for apart from theatrical work, Harry was a GP photographer and included doing weddings for the huge Jewish community in Childwall. Many brides insisted on that nice Mr Watmough, capturing their special day on film, but only on Sunday’s.
They were often 12 hour day long sessions which flowed into Monday to process the vast number of photographs.
Bearing in mind these days were still emerging from the birth of photography, where rolls of film were used like dripping on a slice of bread, creating a celluloid mountain that needed a tight system of filing.
The work was constant and varied. Harry’s speciality was stripping in a letraset title bearing the band name and contact details fitting under the photograph, then printed in all sizes from 10×8 to Half a postcard, which were popular and used as visiting cards for the groups.
Believe me trying to control a group of lads on Pier Head and get a reasonable photograph was a life threatening art form in itself, but ballistic in terms of satisfaction at the end result.
The problem I first faced was photographing some of the 3,000 plus groups in Liverpool at the time. They were adolescents thinking they were the Beatles and being photographed by a similar long-haired callow youth. Harry’s influence on me was instant and successful. He treated his subjects with affable humour and an underlying threat of instant injury if the mark was stepped over. Watching a master at work could not equate to any amount of reading, he generated a respect on his subjects where they worked for him and not against. Oddly enough he found the Beatles difficult and this was at the time when their drummer was Pete Best who was the only sensible one amount them.
Liverpool and Harry Watmough had the sort of effect that legends are made of. I know I would not be the person I am without that magical influence of Scouse humour and solid foundation that makes being a human being sensible and gifted with self assurance and importantly, a sense of pride.
He had great faith in my abilities and often threw me in at the deep end in a sink or swim mode. One such was to photograph a group in the Cavern in Matthew Street. during one of the constant gigs.
The venue made world famous by the Beatles, was a sewer, smelt like one and when crowded with rocking and jiving youngsters, the lack of air conditioning made the walls drip with condensation mixed with the essence of decades reflecting its former usage.
My failure was in trying to get a reasonable image of the group with a large format camera. The condensation formed a thick fog on the plates which left the image a soggy mess totally unrecognisable as a photograph.
He made me return on three occasions after each failure, deciding he would show me how to do it on the fourth.
Pondering over his obscure images the morning after he said: ‘It’s a bugger isn’t it’
I never did get a decent photograph, but I did try in mid winter and never had time to warm the camera up which is what I should have done, but it was like photographing a streaming kettle in a Turkish Bath.
Sadly it all came to an end when the success of Liverpool started to fade with Epstein moving his empire down to Argyle Street in London.
It was a slow demise even with the strength of the Mersey Beat being bigger than any city.
The Beatles went onto world domination which moved south along with the need for larger and glitzier promotion teams.
Photography in Liverpool struggled to cope with the moving spotlight and in the end the volume of lost work could not be made up. I well remember being told one day that it was difficult to pay me any more and I had little choice but to move home to Essex.
It was one of the saddest days of my life, even the prospect of going home could not make up for the magical time I had experienced.
Harry gave up photography and found an accounting job in the Petroleum industry in Devon.
Though I have not said it, I am sure the reader will have gathered from the text that a great light has diminished.
Harry died in early September with his Funeral by definition a sad occasion, but when the memories kick in, the rib tickling begins, and that is how we will all remember that recent day in Taunton, the last resting place of Harry Watmough, photographer.
The one thing that I expected to happen, did not in actuality, but at the last musical tribute in the service of ‘We’ll Meet Again’ I must admit I mind dubbed it for Eric Idle’s ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’ . That was how Harry lived his life and the image he gave all who knew him with the final wicked little smile.
Becoming a legend is something good musicians do without trying, and one such was Romford’s own Bob Marks. A unique character full of enthusiasm and love which he spread around like magic dus…
Finding new ways of measuring our lives is quite fascinating; for instance June 2016 is now down in the record books as how many times you dash out to take in the washing.
Predicting the frequency of showers has moved on from the post Michael Fish days of weekly sayings to the finite hourly doom sheet.
Even casting a glance at the heavens is not a true guide now, as the constant layer of porridge and raspberry jam coloured cloud has shown it not always an indication of a belting precipitation.
One discarded indication used to be the number of performances the Romford Summer Theatre got in before the heavens opened.
Many a tale of soggy and bedraggled actors trying to convince an umbrella laden audience that the Shakespearean play they are watching, is in fact being played out in the relentless sunshine and humid atmosphere of southern Italy.
Now that is acting, however, this year’s production of Much Ado About Nothing has set the rule book back to basics.
No longer do we need to anxiously glance at the BBC forecast or even the porridge stained sky, but to look at the horizon.
Take Friday night’s performance as a good guide.
The playing field in Raphael Park was bathed in brilliant sunshine as the last rays of the day picked out the lush green of the grass and the long shadows of the tree lined perimeter. Ten steps away, and I measured them, the Rockery, where the play was being performed, was plunged into a Dickensian mausoleum grey of total depravity and limp rain soaked feathers bathed in irritating drizzle.
Come back Michael Fish I say, at least we had someone to blame.
The Bard’s comedy is now into its third production tonight (Saturday June18) with a matinee on Sunday and three more performances ending on Saturday June 25.
So the message in this blog if you want a good night out of culture, tea and cakes, is to ignore the elements and come and join us in Raphael Park.
We have not quite got to the Disney Badge stage of shower survival, because it seems the elemental Gods are still discussing the colour they want to paint on the ceiling.
As with most Shakespearian comedies, the dialogue is 1600 but the laughs are definitely modern, and Much Ado is loaded with both.
The story of a turbulent love affair between a character called Benedick and his love target, Beatrice, is a mixture of chaos and confusion as played out in every household for the past four hundred years or so.
To add to the disbelief, the strong cast of 20 players give a two hour rendition of what can only be described as constant pressure, where a blink could be disastrous.
The evening show begins at 8pm on the Rockery which is at the end of the lake in Romford’s premier park in Main Road, with two car parks, one opposite the main Road entrance with a walk by the lake, or the rear entrance of the park where cars are allowed to park on the grass with a short walk down to the stage.

The majestic fountain in Raphael Park lake, a perfect setting for Shakespeare
With spring in the air in between the April/May bouts of snow and torrential rain, it is time to look forward to getting out and about, and the town’s Raphael Park is the place to be.
A fitting tribute to Havering Council’s ground force of gardeners, the Main Road site on the outskirts of Romford, is beautiful and the venue of lots of jollies including the annual dose of culture with Shakespeare in the Park by Romford Summer Theatre (RST) in June.
The elegant fountain set in the middle of the lake is so English and along with the interval tea and cake and hungry mosquitoes free roaming among the seating during the performance, the feeling of being exposed to the Bard at his elemental best is one not to be missed.
This year’s comedy is Much Do About Nothing, a remarkable two hours of total confusion and mistaken identity, that keeps the mirth and fun at fever pitch.
The play tells the story of two pairs of lovers; Hero and Claudio, eager and impatient, and Beatrice and Benedick, fighting against their mutual attraction.
Add to the mix, Don John, who will do anything to upset the intended nuptials of Claudio and Hero to spite his brother.
Showing the total versatility of Shakespeare’s work, the play is set during the second Boer War, where the red-coated uniforms of the soldiers and the elegant gowns of the late Victorian, early Edwardian era will be perfectly highlighted against the atmospheric background of The Rockery in Raphael Park.
The performances are 8pm, 16 / 17/ 18 & 23 / 24 / 25 June 2016 and 3pm Sunday 19 June 2016
